Therapeutic Modalities

Part of Pain Management is Physiological Therapeutics which refers to the adjunctive or ancillary therapies that are frequently prescribed and administered as part of an integrative care program for musculoskeletal and/or connective tissue disorders. These therapies generally involve the use of medical devices, and include, but are not limited to ultrasound, thermal therapy (focused application of heat and cold), and electro-stimulation. Physiological Therapeutics is intended to complement CTM therapy by creating in the treated tissues a state more conducive and responsive to manual therapy. The application of temperature extremes can expand or contract tissues as indicated, electro stimulation has been proven to be highly effective in the stimulation of diseased or injured muscle tissue, and ultrasonic vibrations have been found to reduce swelling and increase blood flow.

Interferential Current Therapy (IFC)
Interferential current therapy is a treatment to aid the relief of pain and the promotion of soft-tissue healing. Tiny electrical impulses are induced into the tissues in the area of the pain. Where these waves intersect below the surface of the skin, the low-frequency stimulation induces the body to secrete endorphins, which are the body’s natural pain-killers. Most patients find interferential therapy to be very beneficial and describe the treatment as being relaxing as it reduces pain and inflammation. Ligament sprains, muscle strains and spasms often respond well to interferential current therapy.

Electrical Muscle Stimulation ( EMS)Electrical Muscle Stimulation, Neuro Muscular Stimulation Therapy
This type of stimulation is characterized by low volt stimulation targeted to stimulate motor nerves to cause a muscle contraction. During the voluntary contractions, which take place in your muscle group during normal exercise, the brain sends a special via a nerve impulse to the “motor point” of your muscle. That signal is a message for your muscle to contract and exercise. An EMS Unit duplicates that message causing the muscle to contract and exercise just as if it received a signal from the brain.

EMS differs from IFC in that it is designed to stimulate muscle motor nerves, while IFC is designed to stimulate sensing nerve endings to help decrease pain.

Russian Stimulation
Russian Stimulation is a specific form of Electro stimulation with a symmetrical Biphasic Square waveform. It was originally developed by the Russian Olympic team for muscle mass enhancement; however it is now more often used for muscle mass and edema reduction in the United States.

Russian Stimulation is similar to EMS in that it is designed to stimulate motor nerves. However the high frequency of 2500Hz allows for deeper muscle penetration and a more complete/stronger contraction of the muscle fibers. It relieves muscle spasms and help patients with Scoliosis.

Ultrasound Therapy
Ultrasound machines are a treatment modality used by Naprapaths that utilize high or low frequency sound waves. These sound waves are transmitted to the surrounding tissue and vasculature. They penetrate the muscles to cause deep tissue/muscle warming. This promotes tissue relaxation and therefore is useful in treating muscle tightness and spasms. The warming effect of the sound waves also cause vessel vasodilatation and increase circulation to the area that assists in healing.

Hot Pack Treatment
Naprapaths wrap moist hot packs in several layers of towels. They are then applied directly on the exposed area that needs treatment. The heat provided by the hot packs has several important benefits. It relaxes tight muscles causing tissues to relax. This decreases pain caused by muscle tension or spasms. It also causes vasodilatation of the blood vessels which increases circulation to the area. Patients with muscle strains, spasms, or arthritis often benefit from treatment with moist hot packs.

Microcurrent Therapy
Microcurrent Therapy uses extremely small amounts of electrical current (millionths of an amp) to help relieve pain and heal soft tissues of the body. Any injury to the body disrupts its normal electrical activity. This therapy is used by producing electrical signals like those naturally occurring when the body is repairing damaged tissues. By applying similar electrical currents, the healing process is enhanced. The electrical current used in Microcurrent Therapy is so small that it is rarely felt. Microcurrent Therapy is often recommended in cases involving soft tissue inflammation or muscle spasm. Since Microcurrent Therapy mimics the body’s electrical fields, it is helpful in relieving pain and stimulating the healing of soft tissues. Some of the benefits to patients are as follows: Can help speed the healing process Reduces swelling and inflammation Masks acute and chronic pain Release muscle trigger points Improves soft tissue regeneration Helps patients suffering from Neuropathy For more information on Microcurrent Therapy, click here.

Far infrared Heat
Far infrared therapy has shown to assist in weight loss, pain management, skin purification, detoxification and stress reduction. Far infrared treatments can also provide relief to patients suffering from arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and certain skin conditions. Far infrared sauna therapy surrounds the body and penetrates deeply into joints, muscles and tissues, speeding oxygen flow and increasing circulation.
