Nutritional Counseling

Diet & Nutritional Counseling

Nutrition counseling sessions at our clinic locations involves determining the patient’s current general overall health by checking the vital signs as well as giving the patient a Nutrition Physical exam. This includes looking for signs of Nutritional deficiencies as well as determining the number of nutrition deficiencies potentially brought on by the consumption of drugs, both prescription and Over-the-counter medications.

The overall diet of our patients is then determined by the utilization of several forms filled out by the patient and utilizing diet history and general exercise and activity level of our patients. These forms are then evaluated for the lack of nutrients in the diet as well as patterns and trends which may lead to further health-care needs. We have several computer programs and other forms to help determine the nutritional status.

Following this initial determination of baseline nutritional and health status by both the analysis of computer and laboratory data via blood, urine, hair and saliva measurements , the clinician , dietitian and nutrition counselor make recommendations for the patient in several areas of nutrition counseling. These areas include the recommendations for the patients in three basic areas.

Maintenance of health

This involves recommendation for the patients of healthy food habits, the utilization of Vitamins, minerals and other supplements, which are appropriate for the age, gender, and general health status of the individual. This approach allows for individualized care and attention in order to maintain a health life. Lifestyle considerations, such as working and family issues are also addressed as they impact nutrition of the patients.

Prevention of disease

We determine the impact of current medications and risk factors such as genetic conditions such as cardiovascular and musculoskeletal as well as metabolic diseases such as Diabetes and prepare the patients for the prevention of these diseases by changing the nutrition in order to reduce the risk.

Treatment of current medical conditions

We base our nutritional advice on the diagnosis of the patient by working with the clinicians who have referred the patient regarding both acute and chronic conditions and dysfunction of the organ systems. We make recommendations regarding the strengthening of organ systems and other functions of the body such as immune regulation for patients who are both referred by clinicians and who come into our clinics without referral.

Where do we start?

We generally start our nutrition treatment with making sure the Gastrointestinal system in good working order in order for the nutrients in our food as well as any supplemental nutrients are able to be absorbed properly and in the correct quantity. We then make certain the liver, pancreas, kidney and lungs are in good working order, again in order to make certain the nutrients are indeed getting to the correct areas of the body in the correct amount.

Dietary Recommendations

Following this initial functional medicine approach to make certain the organs respond in a reliable and efficient manner we will analyze the diets of our patients. We start by determining which foods need to be taken out of the diet, followed by which need to be included or increased.

Supplemental recommendations

Only after dietary issues have been established do we make recommendations for supplements and then finally by recommending certain botanical medicines, which can be very helpful for treatment of structure and function of organs which are dysfunctional.

Follow-Up

We try to make certain to keep in communication with our patients since Nutrition advisee changes with changing conditions of the patients. Follow-up visits are highly recommended on a regular basis in order to maintain a healthy life.
